Become Your Own Home Barista – Learn to Roast, Grind and Brew thePerfect Cup!

Buyingcoffee from a café is expensive, but it can taste just the same, if not better,if you make it at home.

Wouldn’tit be nice to be your own home barista and learn to brew good strong coffee, like the kind you find at a coffeehouse?  Making your own coffee at home may seemintimidating at first, but really isn’t that difficult.

However, good, strong coffee takes a little more than just a heavy hand with the coffeegrounds. To make good strong coffee, the process starts long before the brewcycle; it starts with using the best quality coffeebeans, the right roast and the right grind. Keep reading to find out how you can getthe most out of those delicious, fresh green premiumquality Arabica beansyou just bought.

The Right Roast for theRight Brew

Once you have found the right beans, the next thingthat you need to do is to find the right equipment. There are several methodsavailable to home barista roasters from a stovetop popcorn popper, a skillet toa fully automated roasting appliance. Pour a small amount of your green coffeebeans in your popper, pan or machine and after the firstthree minutes youshould hear cracking. Watch the beans carefully, constantly turning them to prevent scorching or uneven roasting. Ideally, it takes15 minutes to roast coffee beans. In coffee roasting, sound, sight, smell andtiming is of paramount significance to determine when the beans are roasted toperfection. Justbefore they reach the dark colour you want, pour them into a colander and shaketo cool.

The Grind MeansEverything

Ifyou grind your own coffee, choose a setting that gives you a coarse grind. Youdon’t want to use a powdery grind to make strong coffee. You want a chunkyconsistency to get the best strong brew. Store your grinds in a glass jar withan airtight lid. Keep the jar away from light, not in the fridge or freezer.Coffee is at its absolute best when roasted, ground, and brewed within 24hours. However, if you store it in an airtight container out of the light, yourgrounds will stay fresh up to five days.

Brew the Perfect Cup

Withdarker roasts, you do not have to use more grounds to achieve a good strongbrew. Since tastes vary, this is the part where you get to experiment to suityour own taste. Start with a ratio of one rounded tablespoon of coffee groundsper six to eight ounces of water. Gradually increase grinds in ½ tablespoonincrements until you find the perfect ratio for your tastes and coffee maker.
